Having a child is a massive milestone, bringing a new baby into the world brings immense joy to families worldwide. With the arrival of a new baby comes the need for their own space in the form of a nursery. Meticulous planning goes into designing and decorating the perfect nursery for your new addition, considering everything from the curtains to the cupboard knobs.
One of the most important decisions to make is settling on the theme or colour scheme of your nursery, picking something that is appropriate for a newborn whilst still being an aesthetically pleasing room which suits the style of your home.
White nursery, 16,526 predicted Google searches:
By far the most popular nursery colour this year will be white, an unsurprising result as it is the most popular colour to paint interior walls. Interest in white nurseries has increased by over 38% between 2021 and 2022, so it is expected to increase from just under 12,000 searches in 2022 to over 16,500 in 2023.
Neutral nursery, 10,659 predicted Google searches:
Similar to white, neutral is a very popular palette as it’s light and classy. It is increasing in popularity at an even greater rate than white nurseries, as they rose by 48% from 1,850 in 2021 to 7,190 in 2022. Therefore, we predict that at the current rate, they will rise to over 10,600 searches in 2023.
Green nursery, 10,180 predicted Google searches:
Whilst the top two colours are increasing in popularity, green nurseries are expected to drop in the next year. There were over 13,000 searches in 2021, but this dropped by 12% to just 11,570 in 2022.
By far the most popular nursery colour scheme on Instagram is neutral, there are over 100,000 more posts for this than any other. Pink nursery is the closest in second place, with just under 27,000 Instagram posts, there were over 16,500 posts for third-placed grey nurseries.
On Pinterest pink nurseries are the most popular, there were over 36,000 searches for that colour. White nurseries were the second most popular with 1,800 fewer searches, and blue nurseries ranked third with just under 27,000 searches.

Moana nursery, 147,648 predicted Google searches:
Moana will be the biggest nursery trend for nurseries in 2023, if searches continue to increase at their current rate there will be almost 150,000 searches in 2023. In 2021 there were fewer than 90,000 searches, growing by 32.66% to over 111,000 in 2022. Moana’s storyline is centred around the ocean, so a nursery with this theme can be expected to be bright and have lots of blue and green hues.
Winnie the Pooh nursery, 138,395 predicted Google searches:
Winnie the Pooh will be the second most popular nursery theme in 2023, dropping from the top spot in 2022. There were 124,500 searches in 2022, up 11.16% from 112,000 in 2021, at this rate we predict that there will be 138,395 searches next year. The original Winnie-the-Pooh book is 97 years old this year, but after almost a century the characters are as popular with children as ever.
Harry Potter nursery, 45,155 predicted Google searches:
Interest in Harry Potter-themed nurseries is on the wain, despite the recent smash hit game Hogwarts Legacy, searches dropped from 50,600 in 2021 to 47,800 in 2022. Following this trend of a 5.53% decrease in searches there will be 45,155 in 2023, almost 100,000 searches off the top two. Harry Potter is a cultural phenomenon, with over 120 million copies of the first book (The Philosopher’s Stone) sold since it was released in 1997.
The most popular nursery theme on Instagram is Disney, there are over 9,000 posts for Disney nurseries based on all the different characters and films from the animated media giant. Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit secured second place with over 5,700 Instagram posts, just ahead of Harry Potter with 5,414.
Disney and Harry Potter nurseries are also among the top three most popular themes on Pinterest, with 29,500 and 10,700 searches respectively. Disney nurseries were by far the most popular theme on Pinterest, with almost triple the number of searches for Harry Potter nurseries. The third most popular theme is Star Wars, with over 8,000 searches for a nursery in a galaxy far, far away.
Methodology
- A list of colours and themes was made from various lists.
- We used Google keyword planner to find the number of searches for each nursery theme in 2021 and 2022.
- We then calculated the difference between them and used this percentage change to estimate the number of Google searches in 2023.
- We searched the same terms on Instagram to find the number of hashtag posts for each one.
- We used Google advanced search to find the number of searches on Pinterest for each term.
- Instagram and Pinterest hashtag and search totals were collected on the 23rd of February 2023.
